"Here's a super tasty and yummy low fat French toast recipe. My family loves French toast and this recipe is good for you as well as quick and easy. My mom always fixed French toast for us in the skillet. For those that aren't worrying about weight, you could use 6-8 eggs and regular milk.... We always topped this with powdered sugar when growing up."

  1. I make it this way all the time with one change, I bake it at 400 for about 10 minutes and then flip for a couple more. No need for butter or oil that way. Can make a batch and walk away while cooking which is nice. I use low carb high fiber breads that have 35-45 calorie per slice. Or sometimes use Angelic sprouted 7 grain bread which has 60 calorie per slice and is a great bread. These tips get calorie count low when making it for myself.

  2. I'm with lazyme on the cinnamon & vanilla thing, & in fact, I used a generous measure of both! These are great with the egg substitute, something I don't usually use, but will have to stock from now on! A great recipe that lends itself to easy variations! Thanks for sharing! 3. Great French Toast! We didn't miss the fat at all. How can you go wrong with cinnamon and vanilla? Thanks, Gert.

  4. We really liked this recipe, and don't miss the fat at all. DH likes his french toast very soaked before cooking, so we doubled the liquid. Other flavor combos would work well here too, like Grand Marnier and OJ, or Amaretto and almond extract. The french toast would also be great with my recipe#242479. Thank you gertc!

  5. This is a family favorite. I don't just serve this for breakfast but also for supper. My family loves breakfast food for supper. I don't use French bread but Texas Toast. The flavor is FANTASTIC!

FAQs

What can you use instead of butter for French toast? ›

Use thick slices of bread and soak it just long enough to absorb the egg mixture but not so long that it becomes saturated. Shortening or oil can be used instead of butter when cooking the French toast. The amount needed will depend on the size of pan; use just enough to coat the bottom.

Is butter or oil better for French toast? ›

Butter gives French toast a deep richness and comforting quality, which are what we crave on mornings we sizzle this breakfast staple. To prevent burning or smoking, use a combination of butter and oil in the pan to cook the toast.

Should French toast have more eggs or milk? ›

Whatever you decide on, the ratio of liquid to egg will still be about ¼ cup liquid to one egg, and one egg per two slices of bread. So, if you want to make four slices of French toast, you would need four slices of bread, two eggs, and ½ cup milk.

Why is restaurant French toast so much better? ›

According to the chef, the difference comes down to two main elements: the use of high-quality yeasty bread and allowing it time to properly soak. While you can use regular old white bread at home, you may want to give yours an upgrade — try subbing in thick-cut slices of brioche instead.

Is vanilla extract necessary for French toast? ›

Strictly technically speaking, these are optional, but French toast without vanilla and cinnamon just isn't nearly as good! A splash of almond extract or a pinch of nutmeg would also work here, if you have a more adventurous palate.

What is healthiest alternative to butter for toast? ›

Should I leave bread out overnight for French toast? ›

Ideally, the bread should be slightly stale. A drier bread will soak up all the custard. Bread can be left out with the wrapper open the day before cooking. If you find yourself in a pinch, dry your bread slices in a 275°F oven for 10 minutes before soaking them in the custard.

Is French toast healthier than pancakes? ›

Ready to find a winner? It's time for a food face-off. A typical stack of pancakes has almost 500 fewer calories than a plate of French toast—as well as 20 fewer grams of sugar. Pancakes keep up their lead with 78% less saturated fat than their French toast counterparts.

Why is my French toast bland? ›

You're not seasoning aggressively: Milk and eggs are the only essentials required for the custard base—but it's how you season the mixture that will give your French toast a distinctive flavor. A pinch of cinnamon and a glug of vanilla extract are standard upgrades—and a little sugar never hurts either.

Why is my French toast falling apart? ›

Attempting to use fresh, soft slices of bread may result in your toast falling apart before it even reaches the plate. One will find that this fancy bread is made even better with various toppings.

How can you tell if French toast is undercooked? ›

French toast is cooked through when it feels a little firm and bounces back when you poke it.
