"This is total comfort food at it's best, I have been making this for over 20 years and it is still one of my family's favorite meals, a must served with mashed potatoes or fries, this also will work great using pork chops, not the fast fry chops --- this ground beef amount should give you 7-8 fair-sized burgers but will depend on how large you make them, and will also work great using thicker cut pork chops, if desired you may use your own favorite recipe to season the hamburger --- you will need a large skillet for this recipe or your electric fry pan will work great, do not add in any salt to the soup mixture or the burgers the dry onion soup mix is salty enough, I also recommend using low-sodium mushroom soup --- also see my recipe#318998"

ingredients

  • 1 12 lbs ground beef
  • 1 -2 tablespoon minced fresh garlic (or use 1 teaspoon garlic powder)
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 12 of a package dry onion soup mix (can use the whole 2-ounce package)
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 14 cup milk
  • 12 cup dry breadcrumbs (more if needed to hold the mixture together)
  • 12 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper (optional)
  • CREAMY GRAVY

  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1 -2 tablespoon fresh minced garlic (optional, I like to add it in)
  • 1 (10 ounce) can sliced mushrooms, drained
  • 2 (10 1/2 ounce) cans low-sodium condensed cream of mushroom soup, undiluted (for more gravy use 3 cans)
  • 12 of a package dry onion soup mix (I use Lipton's 2-ounce package)
  • 14 cup grated parmesan cheese
  • 2 -4 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper (or to taste)
  • 14 cup 18% table cream (to thin if necessary)

directions

  • In a bowl mix together all ingredients for the burgers.
  • Shape into desired size patties.
  • Heat 1-2 tablespoons butter in a large heavy skillet over medium-high heat.
  • Brown the burgers for about 4-5 minutes on each side (the burger will be browned on the outside they do not have to be fully cooked as they will cook more in the gravy; remove to a plate.
  • Add in onion and saute for about 3 minutes scraping up the browned bits with a wooden spoon while stirring.
  • Add in fresh garlic and canned mushrooms; cook stirring for 1-2 minutes.
  • In a medium bowl, mix together cream of mushroom soup, 1/2 package dry onion soup mix, grated Parmesan cheese, Worcestershire sauce and black pepper; mix well to combine then add to the skillet and bring to a simmer over medium heat stirring.
  • Reduce heat to low and stir in the cream to thin out the gravy (if you prefer a very thick gravy omit the cream).
  • Place the burgers back then turn to coat with a spoon to coat the burgers with the soup mixture.
  • Simmer uncovered on low heat for 1 hour or even longer (I have simmered this for 2 hours on low heat, stirring occasionally, turning the burgers over a few time during cooking).
  • Serve with or over fries or mashed potatoes.

  1. This was a winner at my house, even with the 12-year-old who was sure he didn't like Salisbury Steak. I scaled the patty ingredients back to use 1 pound of meat (with 1 T onion soup mix), and made a full batch of gravy. 1 pound of meat gave me 5 patties, and the amount of gravy was perfect. Served with mashed potatoes and peas with mushrooms. Thanks for sharing!

  2. Really delicious! I have never made Salisbury steak, so was pleasantly surprised with this recipe. Made a half recipe and used leftover gravy plus only a quarter of the recipe's gravy. This was tender and delicious. Ate with mashed potatoes smothered in gravy. Used half package total of the Lipton Onion Soup Mix. Thanks for giving something else to make for supper.

  3. I made this for my family and they loved it. We served mashed potatoes, corn and biscuits with this. What a comforting meal. I really like how the loaves held up nice an firm. The gravy that goes with this is rich and flavorful. This is a keeper, thanks for sharing with us. I love trying your recipes.

  1. This recipe is a family favorite. I made a couple changes, to save time. I add the chopped onions to the meat. And instead of making a gravy, I just use a jar of beef or mushroom gravy. Yummy!

  2. This was delicious! I didn't have an extra can of cream of mushroom so I substituted cream of chicken instead. Unbelievably, it still turned out really good!

  3. I really enjoyed this! My DS did too. Served with mashed potatoes...can't imagine it with fries...I like my fries crisp, not covered in gravy. The only thing I would change is to use less garlic (I can't believe I'm saying this...I love garlic!). But the garlic flavor seemed to overwhelm everything else in the recipe. As other reviewers have stated, it was a little too salty. I'll maybe just use minced onions instead of the soup mix next time too. I used fresh mushrooms...don't like the texture of canned ones. It all came together very nicely and was great with mashed potatoes. Made for Potluck tag!

  4. Yum. Here are the changes I made: used 93% lean beef; added 1 1/2 Tbsp of horseradish to beef (stole idea from another Zaar recipe); added freshly ground flax seed as well as bread crumbs; sliced a whole onion rather than chopped it; replaced 1 can of cream of mushroom soup with 1 can of French Onion soup; thinned the sauce with fat free milk; at the end, I added 2 splashes of dry sherry to the sauce; didn't use the parm. Sounds like I re-created the recipe, but not really. I try and keep things lower fat if possible and boost nutritional value - hence the fat free milk, freshly ground flax seed, and lower fat beef. I like horseradish, that's why I tried adding that. Next time, I think I'll replace the canned French Onion soup with an equal amount of my fresh beef broth - also a Kittencal recipe! - which I just finished making. I made mashed potatoes and it was a total comfort food experience. Thank you once again - Mary

  5. Excellent Dish!!! My husband and I LOVE this recipe. We just finished eating and I had to write my review. I added chopped fresh carrots to the meat, per my husbands suggestion beause his mom did this. The carrots were a great addition. I used milk instead of cream for the gravy. I served with mashed potatoes and steamed broccoli and cauliflower. My son is out of town this weekend so he didn't get to try recipe. I can't wait to make again for him. GREAT DINNER!!!
