Admittedly my family’s obsession with coleslaw had less than healthy origins.

We fell in love with cabbage at fast food joints along side fried chicken and underneath soba noodles. We’re not perfect. I’m the first to admit it. But when I noticed how much we were all enjoying cabbage dishes at those places, I decided to bring it home and try to make our own recipes.

Using your children’s favorite restaurant and fast food dishes as a jumping off point for healthier eating is a great tactic.

Maybe fried chicken and coleslaw from the drive-thru isn’t the best dinner idea if we’re trying to be conscious of what we put into our bodies – but how about recreating that meal at home with ingredients and cooking methods that are healthier.

Instead of breaded and fried chicken, perhaps a pan seared chicken thigh with crunch skin, some home-made oven roasted steak fries, and a pile of fresh malt vinegar coleslaw. Or, a simple stir fry with cauliflower rice, and sauted cabbage instead of ordering Chinese.

Re-imagine your favorite dishes and get your kids to help you make them in the kitchen. It’s a great way to enjoy those comfort food flavors without the guilt.

What to serve with coleslaw

Coleslaw is typically served at barbecues and potlucks. We love it alongside instant pot bbq ribs, pulled pork, creamy cucumber dill salad, and a tray of easy smore’s fudge!

This article was originally a partnered conversation written by Mama Loves Food on behalf of UF/IFAS. Opinions and text are all ours.

For more than 100 years, the UF/IFAS Extension Service has helped improve the lives of Florida’s citizens through research, education, and the application of practical knowledge to solving everyday problems.

Since 1914, when Extension was established, our faculty and staff have helped people save water and money, improve agricultural practices, promote healthy lifestyles, protect the environment, cultivate civic engagement, foster economic development, and prepare strong and capable youth for a vibrant and productive adulthood.

If you’re struggling with incorporating healthy components into your meals and daily life, I’m excited to introduce you to a resource my family really appreciates. The UF/IFAS pronounced “U – F eye-fas” is the University of Florida (go Gators!) Institute of Food and Agricultural Services extension, and it is full of awesome resources.

The UF/IFAS Extensionhelps Florida (and non-Florida!) families eat healthy on a budget with food education, healthy eating tips, and delicious recipe ideas. The percentage of people aged 12 to 19 who were obese increased from 5 percent to nearly 21 percent from 1980 to 2012, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

These children often suffer from Type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure–problems generally associated with adults. UF/IFAS Extension has a local office in each county that provides tools for parents to help their kids lead healthier lifestyles, and curb childhood obesity. You can visit https://sfyl.ifas.ufl.edu/map/index.shtml to find your local office.
